Last weekend, I graduated from Penn State with a degree in Journalism and in French. While I remain unsure where I plan on using my journalism degree, I use my French degree each and every day – through music.
The beauty of music is that you don’t need to know the words to feel something. I’m sure there are plenty of songs in Spanish I jam out to that are depressing as hell, but the true beauty lies in the beat and how that music makes you feel. Plus, new languages result in new experiences like music which can lead to making new friends.
When I first met my friend Madison’s boyfriend Numa, who is from France, I shared my repertoire of French songs with him, and he gleamed with excitement. Not only was this something we could share from his culture, but he could grow my list of songs from his own list.
With my years of French, I’ve accumulated French songs from high school all the way up to now. I’m very picky when it comes to music so its a kind of a short list, but it’s also a good one.
