Booking a fall trip to Charleston? Smart thinking.
September is the start of my favorite time of year in CHS; Fall here is unmatched. It finally becomes cold enough to throw on sweaters and Uggs, but not too cold that you’re miserable hanging outside for too long. Also Charleston’s architecture is the perfect backdrops for fall outfits, so if you’re planning a trip, you’re in luck!
I’ve lived in Charleston for the past year, but in the past few weeks, I’ve had some good eats. Here are some places I’d recommend if you’re traveling or just looking for new spots to try.
September Favorite – Wild Olive on John’s Island

You know it’s good when you make a reservation while sitting at the table. Wild Olive is the perfect date night or gno spot. It’s an Italian restaurant located in John’s Island, so far away from the chaos and bustle of downtown.
Before you walk in, you’re immediately transported out of Charleston and into a small town in Italy. The entrance is picture-perfect as well as in the inside. It’s dark and dim-lit which makes it the perfect spot for a later dinner.
The specials change daily, the wine list is extensive, the menu has options for any preferences – vegetarian, meat-lovers, simple eaters – and you cannot go with any dish, and the desserts are light, delicious and worth the calories.
If you do go here, you have to get the starter focaccia and sourdough bread accompanied by cannellini bean puree. I’m not even kidding, I’ve never had anything so incredible in my life (I would’ve had this for my entree if I could).
The wait staff is friendly and they make sure that you have the best dining experience. I’d highly, highly recommend you make a reservation at least a week in advance if you can find one. If you do find yourself waiting or wanting to stay out after dinner, Low Tide Brewery is right next door and perfect for a laid-back nightcap.

Home Team BBQ – Game Day Classic

It’s a daunting crowd (especially at the downtown location) but Home Team lives up to its hype. Home Team BBQ is a localish chain to South Carolina with delicious selections of meats and sides of traditional bbq.
The downtown location shifts into a lively atmosphere during college football seasons where you will find a sea of orange, garnet and red jerseys. It’s definitely a younger crowd on a fall Saturday but if you snag a seat inside, Home Team is the perfect spot for a casual yet indulgent lunch.
I also opt for the pulled pork plate and split it with a friend. It comes with two sides and I’d recommend their mac and cheese (thank me later) and collard greens (for health, of course). For a drink? You have to try the frozen Irish coffee, it’s insane.

Ellis Creek Fish Camp – Laid Back Bite

While it’s still somewhat hot outside, check out Ellis Creek Fish Camp for a casual dinner or lunch.
This fish camp is tucked away right off the highway from downtown to James Island. It’s a casual seafood spot that sports traditional Lowcountry views of the water and marsh. They have an incredible selection of refreshing cocktails and even better selection of fish.
I love their fish tacos and their fish fry plates are great to share with a friend to try new fish and enjoy their sweet hushpuppies.

Whit’s Frozen Custard – Decadent Dessert

Not Charleston-specific, but it’s here and I love it. I heard of Whit’s from a coworker and I’m so glad I did. They offer simple yet delicious frozen custard options perfect for a sweet treat after dinner or a long day of exploring Charleston.
I just moved to James Island, so this is also a JI classic, but 100% worth the drive over the bridge. I’m a huge fan of the warm cookie with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and chocolate syrup.
